Outline Of Our Final Project: Softball Game

For our final project we originally decided to do a video/slideshow on skateboarding at all the local skate spots in this area. Richie made a google map of the skate parks around here but we changed our minds. We changed the topic of our project to the News 7 VS The Critic softball game because we know people in class played in the game and knew we could make a more interesting project. For the video Ryan Holmes filmed the game, I edited the video and recorded interviews with people from News 7 afterwards and edited it over the footage of the game. Richie Hansen created the slideshow, helped me interview people and edited the audio for the slideshow.

The All American Potion Radio Show write up

Monday nights at 7 DJ Brother and DJ Wolfman set up the radio station just the way they like it. The DJs bring in their own lamp so they don’t have to use the bright studio lights and they hang up an American flag since their show is called The All American Potion. Unfortunately last Monday night when we went to film DJ Brother was running late and did not have time to grab his lamp or American flag to set the mood for their show.
The All American Potion plays a wide variety of music from classic rock to funk, Monday nights between 7 and 9 on WWLR 91.5. The show is hosted by roommates Adam Brothers (DJ Brother) and Ry Wolfel (DJ Wolfman). DJ Brother started the show in the spring of 2009 and has kept the show going with a few other DJs over the years. Recently he started hosting the radio show with Wolfel.
According to Brothers, after a long weekend when Monday comes around and no one is looking forward to school, the radio show is a great way to start off their week. He says its something to look forward to, usually people have the Monday morning blues but for Brothers and Wolfel they have the Monday night jams.
They always start their show with the national anthem since its called “The All American Potion”, sometimes they even sing along to show their patriotism. Around 8 the DJs play what they like to call “The Main Ingredient to the All American Potion”. For “The Main Ingredient” they usually play a longer song for about 15 minutes so they have time to use the bathroom or smoke a cigarette.
According to the Djs its pretty easy to get your own radio show, you just have to go to the WWLR club meetings at the beginning of the semester and talk to the board of directors or Nick Brien, the man in charge. WWLR wants more students to join the club so they are eager to give anyone a chance on the air.
Elias Hantzis, the radio traffic director, who was not their when we filmed, says his job is to make sure Brothers and Wolfel keep a record of the songs they play and the times they play them. “The basic rules are, treat the place better than your house, don’t leave it a mess, fill out the operation log and if you have any guests make sure they fill out the operation log as guest.” Hantzis says.
The rules are pretty simple: Be respectfull of the station, don’t swear on air, keep a record of who is in the studio and all the songs they play, and don’t play more than two songs by the same artist. The DJs don’t always agree with the two songs by one artist rule, they play what they want to hear.

Fishing Video Write up

One major recreational activity that many Vermonters take part in is fishing, whether its ice fishing in the winter, in the summer time, or fishing in the rain like our video.

There are many places and opportunities to fish in Vermont whether you chose to go to one of the giant lakes, ponds, or one of the thousands of tiny streams. There are always fish to be caught if one knows where to look and what they are doing.

However, nobody will get far without a fishing license. The state of Vermont requires that all people must have a legal fishing license in order to cast their line. If caught without a license by fish and wildlife, a sort of nature police, you can get stuck with hefty fines and lose your ability to obtain a permit for a number of years.

The repercussions of getting caught without a license may be steep, but getting one is not that hard. Pretty much any outdoors shop such as a gun shop, sports store, or town office supplies fishing licenses. A few signatures, some paperwork and a small fee, somewhere between twenty and thirty dollars, and the license is yours.

Just because you have your license now does not mean you can go rid the world of all underwater life. There are stipulations and regulations that apply and many times their specific to what body of water you are fishing in. For example one lake may be catch and release only, another may only be fishable during certain months of the year, another may have size limits to what you can keep.

There are over fourteen fishable species in Vermont including trout, bass, and pike. To learn more about Vermont’s outdoor activities visit http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/ and for some information about where some good spots to fish may be visit http://www.scenesofvermont.com/fishing/index.html

For our video we started by driving to Village Sport Shop and filmed the different equipment along with Ryan Holmes buying his fishing license and asking the woman where he could fish. Next we drove to Blake Pond Road in Sheffield and I filmed Ryan fishing in the pond in our friend’s backyard. He caught a few fish and we used a waterproof camera case to try and get some unique shots underwater. Everything went well except when we came back to try and edit the program Dan told us to use Kept freezing and would not work for Ryan, so I  tried editing using I-movie and it worked great, Richie wrote up the great report above this paragraph. All together the project came out good but our audio could have been better.

A Day at News 7 write up

Lyndon State College is unlike any other college because of its intense hands-on Television program. News 7 is based on campus and is organized and run by the students themselves. This station operates almost exactly like a real news organization, broadcasting a newsbreak at three o’clock that tells viewers what to expect for the later half hour news show from 5:30pm to 6 o’clock Monday through Friday. There are many different aspects to working in the newsroom from reporters, field camera operators, anchors, a director, producer, and a team of behind the scenes students who help broadcast the show. Everyday reporters and cameramen/women find and go out on their own stories and leads that then get put on the evening broadcast either that very night or the following night. Once back they edit their footage and add voice-overs. After that the next step is setting up the newsroom. In the hour before the show the newsroom becomes frantic. Technical difficulties, timing issues, and conflicts all arise and must be fixed by the 5:30 deadline because ‘the show must go on.’ Besides all the stories being loaded into the data base and the ‘rundown’, basically the playbill, being rearranged there are a number of jobs that students occupy that are all essential for the show to run. ‘Behind the scenes’ jobs include audio, who sets the levels and brings the sound in and out during the show, ‘Playback’ who loads each video and plays it at the correct time, and the two camera operators who frame up each shot and move around the studio during the show. Each job is equally important and without one of them the show could not happen. News 7 covers the surrounding towns of the Northeast Kingdom and has an impact of the people who tune in. As a rule of thumb the stories we cover cannot be about Lyndon State itself unless it has a big enough impact on the greater community. This is because the majority of the statistical population that watches the broadcast is the elderly non-college community. We cater to stories that affect their lives such as town meetings in other towns that may result in changes that they may not have heard about otherwise. Anyone who watches the show can critique what they have seen online, and many people do. Lyndon State has received many awards due to our television program. About 90% of students who graduate from Lyndon State College through the Television program get jobs right out of college, many of which are spread out throughout the United States. A day at News 7

slideshow two synopsis: a day in the news station

For my group’s second slideshow, were going to make a presentation about what goes on during a day at news 7. My idea is to get pictures of things going on throughout the day and put them in a sequence from the start of the day to the end of the show. For instance maybe start with pictures of photographers setting up a camera when they first get to the news station or reporters making phone calls and looking for a story. Next film the photographer and reporter out on the story or coming back from a story. Then show them editing the video and writing the story to the point where its ready to air. Next take pictures of the staff rushing around at 5 o'clock getting ready for the show and making sure everything is set up right. We can film the sophomore practicum students setting up cameras and audio along with any other jobs taking place right before 5:30. Then film what goes on backstage in the control room during the show. We could end with pictures of the after-show group meeting in the newsroom or the rush of students leaving at the end of the day.

Audio Slideshow 2 topic

For my groups second slideshow, I came up with the idea to make a slideshow about a day down at news 7. My idea is to get pictures of things going on throughout the day. For instance maybe start with pictures of photographers setting up a camera when they first get there or reporter making phone calls for a story. Next if possible the photog and reporter out on the story or coming back from a story. Then show them editing the video and writing the story. Then last but not least the hectic rushing around at 5 o'clock when the staff is getting ready for the show and what goes on backstage in the control room during the show.

CBS Atlanta Facebook critique

When I was trying to find the CBS Atlanta Facebook page I had trouble finding the right page. They have two pages one for the TV show and another page for the organization. When I searched for the page the only one that would come up was the organization not the TV show, which is annoying because the TV show page is the one with more information and links to videos. I had already liked the TV show page and the only way I could find it was going to my home page and clicking on the notification from when I first liked the page. they should make it be the first thing that comes up when you search on Facebook, or at least have both pages come up together. The TV show page is well organized with comments from viewers with problems and things they want CBS to look into and they have plenty of videos linked to the site with pictures from tons of stories. The organization page is a lot shorter with only 4 posts with links to cbsatlanta.com and a description at the bottom from wikipedia. The one problem I had with the Facebook pages is that the page with barely any information on it is the first to come up in the search and the real page you have to look harder to find.

Floor hockey story

The LSCIHL aka the Lyndon State College Intramural Hockey League. For many people they have never had the chance to play the game of hockey on a organized team, the LSCIHL gives people just that chance to play.
The league consists of only allowing 4 experienced hockey players with high school hockey background or higher. The rest of the players must be people who have not had any prior hockey experience or background. This adds a competitive spirit to the league. The players who have experience must play with players that are new to the game. And the new players must adapt quikcly.

We notice the experienced hockey players act as leaders and help teach their newly adapting teammates to the game. The new players learn fast and quickly become competitors amongst other pers. To many, league seems very balance of how the teams are set up and its fun watching a bunch of people just having fun.
We attended one of the floor hockey games to see the final outcome between two powerhouse teams,ROOOF(Red/White/Blue) vs team Whale Pack (Green /Blue) face-off against each other last Tuesday night.
Rooof started off with a bang scoring two goals in the first period. Rooof scored their third unanswered goal early in the second, but than the Whale pack answered back with two quick goals to bring the score within one. But than Rooof desided to score twice more, than the Whale pack was able to slip one more goal by before the end of the second.
With a score 5-3 going into the third, after some arguments of officiating and calls, both teams were unable to score as Rooof once again remains the most undefeated team in regular seasons in LSCIHL History.
What is it that keeps players so interested and so motivated to play a game of street hockey?  Some people believe that it is the level of competiton amoungst the teams. Some players are just trying something new and challenging, and most players are just trying to have fun.
A lot of the teams in the LSCIHL are a group of friends that all share one thing in commmon, the love for the game of hockey. During the game confrontations may occur, but once the buzzer sounds everyone shows sportsmanship by shaking hands, laughing and congradulating eachother about the game, and egar to play eachother once again every next Tuesday or Sunday night.

LSC Intramural Hockey League

The LSCIHL aka the Lyndon State College Intramural Hockey League is our next subject. I plan on interviewing Uriah Brahmas who is handling the scheduling for the league, and perhaps Mike Desmond the new floor hockey manger. Also I may catch a few players on their way out after a game and ask why they are so interested in the new floor hockey league. For many people they have never had the chance to play the game of hockey on a organized team, the LSCIHL gives people just that chance to play. The league consists of only allowing 4 Experienced hockey players with High school Hockey background or high. The rest of the players must be people who have not had any hockey background. This adds a competitive spirit to the league. The players who have experience must play with players that are new to the game. We notice the experienced hockey players act as leaders and help teach their newly adapting teammates the game. The new players learn fast and quickly become competitors amongst other peers. The league seems very balanced with how the teams are set up and its fun watching a bunch of people having fun. Most of the teams have all formed because of friendships. Friends come together to sweat and sacrifice just for the title of a Intramurals Semester Championship.

Slideshows and Photo Gallery Critique

To find a photo gallery to critique I searched on the website Corbis Images and searched vermont snowboarding pictures. The bulk of the pictures were from the Burton U.S. Open in 2002 at Stratton Mountain. The other pictures were from different mountains around Vermont, there are even a few pictures of people skiing. I was surprised that there weren't more pictures of snowboarding, a lot of the pictures are just pictures of the U.S. open crowd and competitors. I think It would have been better with more pictures of people just riding or hitting jumps.
Here is the link: http://www.corbisimages.com/Search#q=vermont+snowboarding&p=1

For the slideshows I started looking on the website Flickr.com and looked up snowboarding in the slideshow search engine. At first I found a few slideshows with without music and found some good ones with music in the background. what I didn't like about the website was how it was difficult to find the original link to the video, the video on Flickr.com was not the entire video. When I finally found the link to the full video it brought me to Vimeo.com another website I searched for slideshows. The video itself was well put together with music in the background to pictures of mountain life and snowboarding.
Here is the link: http://vimeo.com/22270281

For the audio slideshow I searched on google and found a link to the Miami Herald website where they have a section of audio slideshows made as news stories. The store was about a theme park that has been made out of Pablo Escobar's deserted mansion property. The slideshow was interesting with shots of attractions around the island, but the person doing the voice over introduced himself as a reporter at the beginning so it didn't have a good beginning to lead me in. Besides that the slideshow was good it reminded me of something that would be done at news 7 as a voice over.

Burke write up

Ryan Holmes talks to Kyle Gould about the snow conditions on Burke Mountain Kyle Gould, currently a ski instructor at Burke Mountain and has been for the past four years, comments about the amount of snow on the mountain. He says "This is the least amount of natural snow we have ever had...last year we had four feet of snow in the woods, but this year there is less then six inches..." Gould, after explaining the process of how snow is made, talks about the number of trails that are open because trail crews are able to make snow on different trails where there is no natural snow. Gould talked to people coming off the lifts and the people say that the conditions are nothing like last year.

Pimp my Blog

Im not really into blogs this is the first time I have ever used a blog website and I wasn't really sure what to do with it so I kept it pretty basic. I changed the background and chose a template that I liked and I chose a font that looked good and chose colors that would go well with my background.

Critique: three podcasts

The first Podcast that I decided to subscribe to was for the show "Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia" I became interested in their podcast after an episode in season six where two characters Dennis and Dee start their own podcast. In the episode they satire the trend of podcasts that is becoming very popular. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LA7AFfc6Ck this is the link to one of the podcasts from their show which is pretty funny with the way they handle their podcast. Along with their podcast that aired on the show they also have extras that did not make it on air. Another podcast I subscribes to is the "Afterbuzz TV AfterShow for Its always sunny in Philadelphia" which is a good podcast that has the actors/ creators of the show talking about the show and situations the characters get themselves into. The other podcasts that I looked up, one was for my favorite band "The disco biscuits but their iTunes podcast only had one post that didn't play on my computer so I had to look elsewhere for a good Podcast. I was searching for a podcast of a funny comedian that I like and found doug Benson's podcast where he talks about movies that he loves with other comedians and actors. That podcast was hard to access but on iTunes I found another Podcast called comedy Bang Bang which interviews many different actors and comedians about all different topics some which were interesting and some were just silly and not worth listening too.

Critique: CBS Atlanta website

the website makes it easy to access the news you want with stories and videos. The headlines are listed at the top, under that it has the weather and news stories from CBS and CNN. There I read a headline that caught my eye and made me click on it to read more. The title was "Stephen Colbert super PAC raises $ 1 million". When I was watching Stephen Colbert's show on comedy central I thought he was just starting a super PAC to satire on the presidential campaign financing laws, but he actually raised a million dollars. I wonder what he's going to do with that money?

Check it Out: http://www.cbsatlanta.com/story/16644573/stephen-colbert-super-pac-raises-1-million

Man shot in bear hunting accident

While two men Conrad Masse and Wayne Goff were hunting a bear in Albany VT, on October 20, 2011 Masse fired three shots at the bear with one shot hitting a tree, one shot hitting the bear and one shot hitting Goff in the mid section, hitting his pelvic area.

The two men were using bear hounds to chase down the bear while they tracked the dogs with radio telemetry and GPS. They stopped on Urie rd. hoping to get in front of the bear and wait for it to cross the road. Masse dropped Goff off at one end of the road and drove 541 feet down the road to wait. The bear ran in between the two men and when Masse opened fire he accidentally shot his hunting partner. Goff was taken to North Country Hospital then transferred to Dartmouth Medical Center. Goff has been release4d from the hospital and is in a stable condition.

Masse was given a citation to appear in Orleans Superior Court on February 28, 2012 for charges of aggravated assault. He was also issued fish and game tickets for shooting from the road, having a loaded rifle in his vehicle and not having proper display of permits for the bear hounds.

Blog Critique: Tosh.0 Daniel Tosh

Blog Critique: Tosh.0
http://tosh.comedycentral.com/blog/tag/daniel-tosh/

I chose Daniel Tosh's blog because most other blogs I found were boring or not up to date. The Tosh.0 blog might not be the best blog and doesn't cover any important topics but I really like the comedy central show Tosh.0 and knew there would be funny and entertaining comments to read. Im not into blogging this is the first time I have ever really read or used blogs. The blog is very popular with many comments posted by fans even though the show is on a break between seasons. While the show is off the air the blog  posts weekly videos of people auditioning to host an episode of Tosh.0. At the end of the last season Tosh told people to send in audition tapes for a contest. The weekly posted video brought up a lot of discussion with people giving feedback on the audition or just making fun of the person. The reason I like this blog is because its not to serious, its humorous and allows me to laugh and shows funny videos or posts from twitter that people have said about Daniel Tosh. The one downside to this blog is that its mostly filled with fans of the show commenting on stupid things or just arguing with other fans that have posted on the blog. The Tosh.0 blog is posted by Carly Hallam every few days with entertaining videos, blogs and updates on what Tosh is doing while on break from the show, if you like the show Tosh.0 you will most likely find the blog funny and entertaining.
